How long is the Murray River?
We can't answer that question simply!
There are different facts within the Australian Government on the length of the Murray River. The length varies depending on how it is measured. There are a few different methods that each give a slightly different answer.
Geoscience Australia use a slightly different method to determine the length of the Murray River and record it at 2,375km. This also makes it Australia's longest river.
The Murray-Darling Basin Authority state the river length as 2,520km and also state the length of the Darling River at 2,740km which combines all the waterways of the Darling above Bourke. Geoscience Australia state the length of the Darling River at 1,472km from the Murray River to Culgoa River.
The MDBA state the start is on the side of Forest Hill, but the actual 'point' can change due to natural processes from year to year and measure the length to the Murray mouth near Goolwa.
So with the lengths, either Geoscience Australia or the Murray-Darling Basin Authority both are 'correct'.
