'Tour of the Murray River' professional road cycling classic
29 Aug - 05 Sep 2010
The Tour of the Murray River was first held as a three-day event in 1996. It was known as the Tour of Sunraysia.
It was expanded into a four-day tour in 2002 and five days in 2005 with a name change, six days in 2006 and eight days in 2007, embracing three states.
The tour has grown into Australia’s premier domestic road cycling classic, attracting entries from all Australian States, New Zealand and the United States.
It is now regarded as a breeding ground for future Australian international team members, and a vital lead-up event for Olympic and Commonwealth Games.
The Tour of the Murray River is more than just a bike race. It is a community event.
The 2010 tour will embrace eight municipal councils in Victoria and New South Wales – Swan Hill, Campaspe, Wakool, Murray, Mildura, Balranald, Yarriambiack and Wentworth.
Participating riders visit many schools and address children on road safety, health and fitness, the evils of drug-taking, and recreational and competitive cycling.
An official entourage of about 500 accompanies the tour. This includes cyclists, crew members, officials, sponsors, police and media. Supporters are extra.
The tour is an important source of economic activity for cities and towns along the route. It is like a great travelling circus.
The tour is administered by an enthusiastic group of volunteer citizens, under the patronage of Eddie Warhurst, former Mayor of the Mildura Rural City Council.
The promoting group is Caribou Publications, a Victorian-based publishing and event organisation company.
Former Melbourne Herald journalist John Craven is Caribou’s managing director. Caribou organised the Herald Sun Tour and Great Otway Classic, both for 16 years, and also promote the Great Ocean Road International Marathon, Tour of Tasmania and the Australian Open Road Cycling Championships, among other events.
Media coverage of the tour is at near-saturation levels along the Murray River regions, on television, radio, and in newspapers.
SBS screened a 60-minute documentary of the 2009 tour.
