Discover Murray River Heritage Trail
Discover Murray offers you some amazing and interesting stories of the Murray River and Mallee regions that have shaped Australia's culture, tradition and heritage. When you explore the stories of our region you'll begin to see the rich experiences to connect with.
The Murray River is a fine thread that runs through Austalian communities and within each community are their own unique stories you can appreciate and learn to enjoy and experience.
Murray Mallee stories started over 40,000 years ago with evidence of Aboriginals living by the now dry lake beds of the World Heritage Willandra Lakes and Mungo National Park. Before Europeans began to populate the area, the Murray River region had the largest amount of Aboriginals living by its banks and around the billabongs.
Within the region you'll find a diverse and interesting range of regional museums, pioneer parks, historic villages, historic town walks, riverboat trails, bushrangers and the unique architecture of thriving river and mallee communities. What's great about our region is it's so friendly. You can explore and find low cost, relaxing experiences and gain a new insight into Australia's rich heritage that began it's European roots in 1824 when Hovel and Hume discovered the Murray at present day Albury Wodonga.
We'd like to encourage you to read about or write your own Discover Murray Mallee story and contribute to recording the legacy of our authenic region.
