One of the best things about a Murray River houseboat holiday is it's accessibility to Melbourne, Victoria and Adelaide, South Australia. Within 1 hour of Adelaide you can be on the back of your boat, with a cold drink, ready to kick back and relax or just 2.5 hours from Melbourne. If you've got a bit of time to travel, the really unique riverscapes and solitude are in the remote areas away from the close city river based towns, you'll just need to go a bit further to get the river to yourself.
