Murray River Tri-State
National Landscapes Objectives

July 2009

Purpose:

These objectives are borne out of a strong desire by our stakesholders (tourism operators, councils, regional tourism, Parks authorities, regional development bodies etc participating on the Steering Committee) in the Murray River Tri-State region to collaborate in the development of world-class tourism experiences to attract domestic and international visitors to our world-renowned landscape. The strategy aims to qualify the region as an Australian National Landscape while ensuring we develop both environmental and economically sustainable tourism opportunities to benefit all stakeholders.

Our Landscape:

The Murray River Tri-State region incorporates several significant national iconic and naturally unique landscapes including the World Heritage Willandra Lakes System and Mungo National Park and the Murray and Darling River’s. There is an abundance of national parks and diverse biospheres in a semi-arid mallee environment. The region contains an incredibly abundant indigenous culture and a fascinating European and pioneering history. It also offers a cosmopolitan lifestyle and international renown wine industry.

The region is uniquely positioned on the edge of the outback with gateways through Broken Hill and the Flinders Ranges from the north and west and through Swan Hill from the south-east. The Sturt Highway links to Adelaide, Sydney and Canberra and opportunities for touring loops from Melbourne. The region is serviced by Mildura’s large central regional airport. These strengths make us proud and determined to showcase the Murray River Tri-State region and its unique experiences to the world.

We have recognised and intend to build on the excellent and unique nature tourism product that has developed and is already operating in parts of the region.

Objectives:

1. We aim to attract the experience seeker target market as defined by the objectives of the National Landscapes program

2. We aim to tell authentic stories about the unique experiences only found in the Murray River Tri-State region to create a strong brand

3. We aim to define a new tourism region that will draw strength from all levels of co-operation across local and state borders for the benefit of visitors, the community, the tourism industry and the National Landscapes program

4. We aim to protect and conserve areas and ecosystems with natural, cultural and historical significance for visitor use, appreciation and enjoyment while advocating and encouraging the region’s sustainable development

5. We aim to nurture, support, stimulate and develop experience seeker tourism products and related business opportunities

6. We aim to develop and achieve economic growth in our region

7. We aim to attract private and government support and investment

8. We aim to support and co-operate with regional parks authorities to continually improve excellence and growth in visitor management, facilities, services and plans

9. We aim to support, partner, develop and nurture authentic indigenous tourism products while protaecting and respecting indigenous heritage and values

10. We aim to support new and refreshed sustainable tourism developments

11. We choose to collaborate as a balanced, self-managed, sustainable autonomous body that supports the tourism industry

12. We choose to align with our state tourism organisations, regional tourism organisations, local government and regional development strategic plans and objectives

13. We aim to establish tourism training and skills development opportunities within our region

14. We aim to develop and maintain a business, marketing and master plan that will provide long-term tourism and environmental sustainability to our region.
