Salt Creek at the southern tip of the Coorong

Salt Creek is a small town located along the Coorong on the Princes Highway between Meningie (60km) and Kingston S.E. (85km)

Salt Creek offers 4WD, fisherman, kayakers, birdwatchers, mountain biking and much more to experience this remote wilderness region of South Australia only 2 hours from Adelaide.

You can also enjoy the local Ngrugie Ngoppun Walk and Lakes Nature Trail. View the replica Oil Rig at Salt Creek. Chinamans Well – 16kms south of Salt creek is believed to have been built about 1856 by Chinese immigrants. The Chinese supplied fresh food and water to travellers.

Martin Washpool Conservation Park nearby is a great birdwatching, bushwalking and kayaking/canoeing.

You can access the Coorong and Southern Ocean through the Forty Two Mile and Tea Tree Crossing where the Ninety Mile Beach is a favourite Surf Fishing spot. It is 4WD only. Further along from Salt Creek there is 2WD access to Granites Beach and the Coorong.

Enjoy the local Heart of the Coorong Roadhouse. The roadhouse is the only place for fuel and services between Meningie and Kingston S.E. and offers accommodation.

Oil rig monument

In 1892, a group of entrepreneurs, who believed there was oil located in the Coorong, drilled Australia's first oil well. They were unsuccessful, as it was later discovered that the 'oil' was in fact a flammable, compacted vegetable substance (known as 'coorongite'). A replica of the oil rig has been built as a monument to this enterprise.
