Pangarinda Arboretum, Wellington
The Pangarinda Arboretum in Wellington, South Australia near Lake Alexandrina and Tailem Bend on the Murray River is a vision that embraces conservation, education and tourism. The Arboretum is a link in a chain of endeavour to conserve Australia's threatened flora with emphasis on species from the highly modified drier agricultural regions of southern mainland Australia.
The Arboretum concept was initiated by a group of local residents seeking to beautify the district. The site, now managed by the Coorong District Council is approximately 30 hectares of crown land, formerly weed infested, eroded sand drifts with a few remnant patches of native Pines (Callitris gracilis). Pangarinda is the local Ngarrindjeri dialect means Sunset. A committeed of eleven members was elected at a public meeting at Tailem Bend in September 1993.
The natural beauty of the Pangarinda Arboretum, one of the region’s best-kept secrets. Formerly a weed infested, eroded sand drift site, the Pangarinda Arboretum proudly stands as a flourishing testament to committed community volunteer labour. Best viewed in spring with a burst of colour and life you can also enjoy the wonderful birdlife that the Arboretum attracts.
