SAVING WATER AT
YOUR GOLF CLUB
Have
you seen the “humungous” rainwater tank at the rear of the
Bowling Greens or the new drought resistant grass on the Golf
Course Fairways?
Howlong Public School students
Did you know that the
Golf Club usually draws its’ irrigation water from the River
Murray but last summer season our 200 Mega litre river licence
allowance was reduced to zero and the Golf Club has had to rely
on its’ bore water to irrigate the course.
This has been
satisfactory but there have been minor problems with the Greens
because of the mineral content of the bore water.
Your Golf Club has been
taking steps to reduce its’ water usage and in 2006 the Club
started a program to replant the Fairways with a drought
resistant grass called “Legend Couch”. Trials by the Victorian
Golf Association indicated a water saving of over 50% for
Fairways replanted with this grass and we should achieve nearly
this in the hotter climate of Howlong. The Club started this
project in 2006 by turning the practice fairway into a Nursery
for the Legend Couch using sprigs of couch from another course.
Last summer nine fairways were “sprigged” with this couch and
this summer the remainder of the course will be done. Golfers
have had to put up with some inconvenience during this time but
they all seem to have appreciated the need to save water whilst
keeping our golf course green.
In late 2006 the Club
applied for a grant from the Commonwealth
“Community Water Grants” scheme and with support from our Federal
MP Sussan Ley we received a grant of $46,566 to recycle rainwater
from our Clubhouse roof to water our Bowling Greens and Gardens.
The Club contracted with a Melbourne firm “Storm Water
Preservation Ltd” to undertake the project and in October this
year it was commissioned. The project collects water from the
Clubhouse roof into a sump and then a submersible pump pumps the
water into the tank behind the Bowling Greens so it can be used
for watering of the Greens & Gardens (which are normally watered
with town water supply). The Golf Club undertook works
additional to that in the contract and traded this for a larger
tank (248,000 litres rather than the 110,000 litres calculated)
so that we would be in a position in the future to save water
from the Motel roof which is presently lost into stormwater
drains.
Your Club also applied
for Commonwealth grants in 2007 for the Motel roof rainwater
project and a very large project to replace our Golf Course
irrigation system with a more efficient computer controlled
system (with moisture sensors in the ground and rain sensors)
however we missed out this time. We will not despair though and
we will keep on with our water-savings projects and the seeking
of grants as we realise that our Club’s future is tied very much
to having a “Green” Golf Course and gardens.
Below are photos taken on
Monday 26th November of the boys and girls of Howlong
Public School doing their bit for the Rainwater Recycling Project
and the environment by planting “Drought Resistant” Native
Grasses around the base of the new “humungous” rainwater tank to
stop erosion of the sand base.
