Cowangie / Kow Plains Homestead brochure - 200kb pdf
Cowangie is the birthplace of racing legend Larry Perkins. Much more that a mallee town on the Mallee Highway, you can explore the Kow Plains Homestead and get an insight into the pioneering history and resilience of the early settlers in the region.
The Kow Plains Homestead has been lovingly restored by a group of passionate locals for everyone to enjoy. In the town of Cowangie you'll also find another great part of mallee history. The old Nurses' Cottage on the main street is a chance to get a glimpse into the challenging life of the local region's nurse who serviced the entire region. This included the delivery of local babies, tending to emergencies and alike.
Next to the Nurses' Cottage is the old Baker's Oven. Restored by the local community in a great partnership with the Dennis from the renowned Pinnaroo Bakery. There is an annual community gathering where the old bakers over is stoked up and used to cook pizzas. A great day for everyone.
Close by you'll find the townships of Walpeup and Murrayville in Victoria and Pinnaroo in South Australia. Cowangie also allows access to the Great Mallee Wilderness where the magic of the Mallee comes alive with beautiful and fragile mallee flowers, the intreging Mallee Fowl and unique Australian wilderness.
