Lots to see and do
The mighty Murray awaits, with every twist and turn offering a new
and exciting experience. You're the skipper! Where you call can be
as varied and fun filled as your imagination permits. Seek out a
quiet beach or sandbar and enjoy a BBQ with some good local food and
wine. Explore the banks and bends of one of Australia's most
important and historical river systems, and enjoy the wildlife along
its shoreline. Certainly good company and beautiful surroundings
will afford you a pleasurable, exciting and a distinctively
different trip
A lazy day
aboard
Pull into one of Echuca/Moama's wonderful wineries - some serve
meals and all offer exquisite locally grown wine varieties for you
to taste and purchase (ask us for details). Another opportunity to
catch up on the latest best seller, laze on the sundeck with a glass
of good cheer; perhaps a spot of fishing or a paddle in the river.
For dinner, a sunset barbecue on a sandbar is a great way to relax.
Enjoy the wonders of nature
The Murray River wanders past wetlands where bird life abounds with
a large
variety of birds. As the river winds through the forest areas,
kangaroos and emus
can be seen in the wild.
The
magic of the Murray
It is hard to describe the wonderful ambience of the Murray River
with its ever
changing moods. Near the twin towns of Echuca and Moama is the
picturesque
scenery of red gums lining the banks like an avenue of honour
commemorating
the pioneers and paddlesteamers for which the area is famous.
At the historic Port of Echuca, from your houseboat there is a
magnificent
photo opportunity as you sail past the huge historic wharf, home to
so many paddlesteamers who operate daily along the river.
Historic Port of Echuca
The
historic Port of Echuca and its Wharf provides an insight into life
in the
1900's when Echuca was the largest inland port in Australia. There
are horse
drawn carriage rides, a wood turner, blacksmith and potter
demonstrating their
skills as well as a steam driven saw mill.
Echuca and Moama
Many of the tourist attractions of Echuca and Moama are within easy
walk of
the river. There is the historic High St shopping precinct, the
other shopping
centres and attractions like the historic Port of Echuca with its
truly amazing
wharf designed to cope with huge floods and low water levels. Around
the wharf
are a variety of paddlesteamers with most operating regularly along
the river.
On the wharf are displays of equipment from the working days of the
wharf
when it was the transfer point between the river and rail to
Melbourne.
Fishing
Fancy some fishing? A Dinky-Di houseboat will take you in comfort to
good
fishing spots on the river. Dropping a line into the calm Murray
waters is a relaxing
way to spend your day. Perch, Yellowbelly and Redfin are just some
of the tasty
fish on offer. The mighty Murray Cod is also back in sustainable
numbers.
This grand fish is a favourite catch for many freshwater anglers.
Catching a crayfish in season is great fun for the whole family and
delicious eating
too! The season lasts from May to August. Crayfishing equipment is
available
from Dinky-Di. We can also provide you with information on where and
how to
catch the crayfish and can even give you a big pot to cook them up!
If you intend to do a spot of fishing you need to acquire a fishing licence
(NSW Fishing
Laws apply).
Something further afield
If you would like to venture a little further from the river, no
problem. Dinky-Di
offers a special service for our customers. All it takes is a quick
call on the
two way radio and we'll arrange one of the NSW Clubs' (Rich River
Golf Club,
Moama Bowling Club and RSL Club courtesy buses) to pick you up from
the houseboat
and take you
to a meal or game of golf then return you to the
boat when you are
good and
ready, no charge.
See below is a
list of riverside attractions with further details
Fabulous dining - and so inexpensive
For those who enjoy the finer things of life, there is a wide
variety of quality
restaurants and bistros. Take a break from the cooking and have a
sumptuous
lunch or dinner with some great local wines. Great fare and so
inexpensive!
Just tie up your houseboat and a short stroll, courtesy bus trip or
taxi ride to
one of the licensed clubs or pubs with their entertainment, fine food and poker machines, a restaurant
on the
historic wharf overlooking the river, or intimate
Echuca restaurants
each with
their own individual character.
For
the adventurous
For a holiday that is a bit more energetic just let us know your
preference and
we can put you in contact with canoe and kayak hire, horse riding, golf and
much
more. With
prior arrangement you can even explore the surrounding
regions from
the goldfields of Bendigo to the local wineries, and wineries of
the Goulburn Valley with a specialist tour
operator.
